Parent Coaching & Family Therapy

Parent Coaching, Parenting Guidance, & Family Counseling for Parents of Children, Teens &
Adult Children
We Want Your Family To Thrive

HOW CAN PARENT COACHING & FAMILY THERAPY HELP YOUR FAMILY?

We believe that most parents are doing the best they can with the information, skills, and resources they have available.

In our experience, we've met very few "bad" parents. Rather, we've worked with many, many good parents who love their children deeply but feel like they've tried everything and don't know what else to do.

Maybe the parenting strategies that worked with your other children aren't working with this one. Maybe you and your partner disagree about how to respond to your child's struggles. Maybe you find yourselves having the same arguments over and over, or you know what you should be doing but putting it into practice is a whole different story.

And sometimes, despite your best intentions, parenting feels a lot harder than you ever imagined it would.

We get it.

Whether your child is navigating ADHD, an eating disorder, emotional or behavioral challenges, or other mental health concerns, we're here to help you better understand what's happening, build on your existing strengths, and develop practical strategies that work for your family.

As Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, we bring clinical training, specialized experience, and evidence-based approaches to our parent coaching and family therapy services. Our goal isn't to tell you that there's one right way to parent. It's to help you feel more confident, connected, and equipped to support your child while also caring for yourself and your family.

We believe YOU are the most important resource your child has.

You know your child in ways no one else does, and we want to help you feel equipped, confident, and empowered to support them in ways that work for your family.

Our job isn't to replace your instincts or tell you how to parent. It's to help you build on what you already know, develop new skills, and find a way forward together.

Because ultimately, our goal isn't just to help your child thrive. We want your whole family to thrive!

What Is Parent Coaching &

How Does It Work?

Parent coaching provides parents and caregivers with individualized guidance, education, and practical tools for navigating parenting challenges and supporting their child's emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs.

At Three Birds Counseling, our parent coaching services are grounded in mental health therapy and incorporate family therapy, parent training, psychoeducation, and evidence-based or evidence-informed parenting approaches.

While many families initially look for a parenting coach, our clinicians bring the additional perspective of extensive clinical training and experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families.

Parent coaching is collaborative, practical, and tailored to your family's unique needs. Together, we'll explore what's happening in your family, identify what's working (and what's not), and develop strategies you can put into practice in your everyday life.

What Can We Work On Together?

Every family is different, but some common areas we address include:

  • Understanding your child's emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs

  • Building your child's capacity to navigate challenges, tolerate discomfort, and develop resilience

  • Responding to emotional dysregulation, frustration, avoidance, or resistance

  • Establishing and maintaining boundaries and expectations

  • Improving parent-child communication and connection

  • Navigating differences in parenting styles or approaches

  • Developing more effective routines and strategies at home

  • Supporting age-appropriate independence and responsibility

  • Breaking out of recurring conflict patterns

  • Building confidence in your parenting decisions

  • Managing parenting stress and reducing family tension

  • Supporting a child through mental health treatment or recovery

And here's something important: your child doesn't necessarily need to attend sessions for you to benefit from parent coaching.

Depending on your family's needs and treatment goals, we may work primarily with one parent, both parents, or other caregivers. In some circumstances, sessions may also include your child or additional family members.

We don't expect you to arrive knowing exactly what needs to change. Part of our work together is figuring that out, trying new approaches, and making adjustments along the way.

Our goal is to help your family function more effectively, feel more connected, and build skills that support long-term well-being.

ADHD Parent Coaching

Your child isn’t giving you a hard time just to make your life difficult. And you’re not a bad parent because the usual parenting strategies aren’t working.

Parent coaching for ADHD helps parents better understand how ADHD affects their child's emotions, behavior, executive functioning, and daily life, while developing practical strategies to support them.

Parenting a child or teen with ADHD can bring unique challenges, particularly when it comes to emotional regulation, executive functioning, motivation, routines, and follow-through.

You might find yourself repeating the same reminders over and over, arguing about homework, struggling to get out the door in the morning, or feeling like you’re constantly managing things your child should be able to handle independently.

And while you may understand that ADHD is affecting your child’s functioning, it can still be really hard not to feel frustrated!

At Three Birds Counseling, we offer concrete, practical solutions aimed at creating greater peace, functionality, harmony, and connection for the whole family.

Eating Disorder Parent Coaching &

Family-Based Treatment (FBT)

When your child has an eating disorder, knowing how to help can feel overwhelming.

Eating disorders can affect nearly every part of family life. Meals that were once enjoyable may become stressful or frightening. You may find yourself questioning when to intervene, what to say, how much support to provide, or how to respond when your child becomes distressed.

Parents often feel scared, exhausted, helpless, or uncertain about whether they're doing the right thing.

We understand how difficult this can be. And we want to help.

At Three Birds Counseling, we love helping children, teens, adults, and families heal from eating disorders, navigate challenges with food and body image, and build more peaceful, connected relationships with food, their bodies, and one another.

We want your child to be able to enjoy food again, experience greater freedom from eating disorder thoughts and behaviors, experience their body as home, and get back to living a full, vibrant life.

We want your kid to get back to being a kid, and your family to get back to being a family —

without the eating disorder running the show.

What Is Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for Eating Disorders?

Family-Based Treatment (FBT), sometimes called the Maudsley approach, is an evidence-based treatment for adolescent eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Family-based approaches can also be adapted to support children and adolescents with other eating disorders, including ARFID.

At its core, FBT recognizes that parents and caregivers can be some of the most powerful resources in their child's recovery.

FBT doesn't blame parents or children for the development of an eating disorder.

Instead, it empowers caregivers to play an active role in supporting recovery, responding to

eating disorder behaviors, and helping their child gradually regain physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.

Depending on the child's needs and stage of recovery, this may involve parents taking a more active role in supporting nutrition, interrupting eating disorder behaviors, and managing distress around food and meals. As recovery progresses, responsibility and independence can gradually be returned to the child in developmentally appropriate ways.

How Can Eating Disorder Parent Coaching Help?

Whether your family is participating in FBT or another eating disorder treatment approach, parent coaching can help you feel more confident and equipped to support your child.

Depending on your family's needs, our work may include:

  • Understanding eating disorders and how they affect your child's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors

  • Learning how to provide effective meal and snack support

  • Responding to eating disorder behaviors, anxiety, resistance, and emotional distress

  • Reducing conflict and power struggles around food, eating, and recovery

  • Helping parents establish a consistent, compassionate approach to supporting recovery

  • Navigating differences in parenting approaches or treatment expectations

  • Understanding when to step in, when to step back, and how to support age-appropriate independence

  • Building your child's capacity to tolerate discomfort and navigate recovery-related challenges

  • Supporting healthier communication, connection, and relationships throughout the family

  • Helping parents manage the emotional stress and uncertainty that can accompany their child's recovery

  • Collaborating with your child's eating disorder treatment team when appropriate

Our clinicians draw from specialized eating disorder training, family-based approaches, and other evidence-based therapies to individualize treatment to each child and family's needs.

We also recognize that eating disorders require coordinated care. When appropriate, we collaborate with eating disorder-informed registered dietitians, medical providers, and other members of your child's treatment team to ensure your family receives the support it needs.

We believe that parents are an invaluable part of eating disorder recovery.

Our goal is to help you feel empowered, supported, and confident in your ability to help your child heal.

Because recovery isn't just about getting through the next meal.

It's about helping your child — and your whole family — get back to living.

PARENT COACHING FAQ
Is Parent Coaching the Same as Family Therapy or Family Counseling

At Three Birds Counseling, our Parent Coaching services are provided within a clinical mental health treatment framework and may incorporate family therapy, parenting skills training, and psychoeducation. We use the term parent coaching because it describes the collaborative, practical, and skills-focused nature of much of this work. Your clinician will discuss the clinical focus of treatment, who is participating, and the goals of services with you during the intake process.

Does My Child Need to Attend Parent Coaching Sessions

Not necessarily! In many cases, we work primarily with parents or caregivers. This allows us to focus directly on parenting strategies, communication, family dynamics, and ways to better support your child. Depending on the treatment approach and your family’s needs, your clinician may recommend involving your child or other family members in some sessions.

Do Both Parents Need to Participate?

Ideally, yes! Parent coaching is often most effective when both parents or caregivers are actively involved and working toward shared goals. Having everyone on the same page can help create greater consistency in parenting approaches, expectations, and responses to challenges. That said, we recognize that having both parents participate isn't always possible, and every family's circumstances are different. Parent coaching can still be valuable when only one parent or caregiver participates. We'll work with whoever is able and willing to attend, focusing on the changes and strategies within their control. And if you and your co-parent aren't currently on the same page, that's okay, too! Navigating differences in parenting styles, expectations, and approaches is something we can work on together.

What If My Partner and I Disagree About Parenting?

That’s actually one of the reasons families seek parent coaching! Parents may share the same goals for their children but have very different ideas about how to get there. We can help you explore those differences, improve communication, and work toward more consistent and collaborative approaches when appropriate.

Are You Going to Judge Our Parenting?

Absolutely not. Most parents are doing the best they can with the skills, resources, and information available to them. We know there is no single right way to parent every child, and we aren’t here to tell you that your family needs to look or function like someone else’s. Our goal is to understand your family’s strengths and challenges and help you develop approaches that align with your needs, values, and goals.

What Theories and Approaches Inform Your Parent Coaching?

Our parent coaching services are grounded in a variety of evidence-based and evidence-informed therapeutic approaches, specialized training, and years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. Several of our clinicians have completed specialized training through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, including training in Family-Based Treatment (FBT) and Adolescent-Focused Therapy (AFT) for eating disorders. Our work with parents of children with ADHD is also informed by established behavioral parent training approaches, including the work of Dr. Russell Barkley, author of Your Defiant Child. More broadly, we draw from approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Conscious Discipline, and Adlerian parenting concepts, including understanding the purposes of behavior and using natural and logical consequences. Our clinicians also bring training and experience in child and adolescent development, attachment, family relationships, and a variety of other therapeutic approaches, including Motivational Interviewing, Relational-Cultural Therapy, Developmental Counseling and Therapy, EMDR, and Brainspotting. These perspectives help us understand not only children's behaviors, but also the emotional, developmental, and relational dynamics influencing those behaviors. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to parenting. While our work is informed by established research and clinical frameworks, we don't typically follow a single parenting protocol rigidly. Instead, we work collaboratively with families to develop practical strategies that account for each child's unique needs, developmental stage, family relationships, cultural background, values, and circumstances. Our goal is to help you understand why certain approaches may be helpful, identify what works for your family, and develop parenting strategies that feel both effective and sustainable.

Do You Accept Insurance for Parent Coaching or Family Therapy?

Three Birds Counseling is a fully private-pay, out-of-network practice. We are not in network with insurance companies. We can provide superbills upon request when appropriate to the clinical services provided. However, coverage and reimbursement vary by insurance plan, and we cannot guarantee reimbursement for any services. We encourage families who wish to use out-of-network benefits to contact their insurance provider directly.
