Hi, I’m Ryan (He/Him). I'm so glad you're here. Since you found your way to this page, I'll share what I'd want for you as your counselor:  

I Want You To Grow & to Thrive

 

I'll explain what I mean by this but, first, there are a few things that will help with context:

1: I'm not afraid to laugh at myself, call it like it is, or call *bullshit* when something's unfair, untrue, or just plain harmful (That's what drew me to question systems like diet culture, queerphobia, racism, etc.).

2: I love a good metaphor, funny pop culture reference, and/or TikTok;

3: And one of my hobbies is learning about and tending to a myriad of houseplants.

Growing and caring for plants is kind of like my approach as a therapist, leader, and activist. I know that

You Can't Force Growth

Just like you can't force plants to grow faster, you can't throw someone in therapy and expect them to trust & heal right away; you can't force recovery; and you can't change systems of oppression overnight. That's why I've learned to put so much care and tenderness into creating an environment conducive to my clients' process of growth and healing.

We humans can be both vulnerable AND incredibly resilient. We need care, space to grow, nourishment, attention, and love.

If you found your way here to this page, I imagine you've survived some pretty tough circumstances and pain AND I imagine it hasn't been easy. Just because you've survived doesn't mean you've had a chance yet to thrive.

I'd love to help you get there. I'd love to help you see realities that haven't yet felt possible or accessible.

I want more for you. I know what it feels like to feel invisible, misunderstood, invalidated.

I have my own experiences of feeling isolated as an outsider and disconnected from my sense of self.

I want to help you feel safe to be visible and vulnerable in the relationships and spaces you wish to be so,

while also accessing the level of protection and comfort you deserve. 

I believe that everybody (and every body) has an innate birthright to feel seen, heard, and valid as the individual they are.

To have access to opportunities for joy, connection, safety, advancement, education, self-direction, and healing.

You came to this site because some part of you wants more out of life, relationships, and the healing process. Maybe, even, you want out of the trauma or pain you've experienced. We are not meant to be hidden away, restricted, or muted. Like plants, with the right conditions of nourishment and space and care and time, we have the potential to blossom and flourish and endure. You deserve the right conditions to do so, and I'd be honored to help you create that environment.

MY EDUCATION & TRAINING

I have a Master’s degree in Counseling, with a specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (2015) from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (2012) from James Madison University. My graduate program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

MY THEORETICAL APPROACH:

My counseling style is integrative and flexible, based on each client's individual needs. I utilize several components of the humanistic, existential, Gestalt, and feminist philosophies and practices that are tailored to the presenting problems of my clients; however, I approach therapy with a cognitive behavioral (CBT) foundation. I have been trained and/or certified in the following: Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST), Contingency Management, Seven Challenges, Triple P: Primary Care Teen, Triple P: Standard Level 4, Triple P: Standard Level 3, Triple P: Standard Level 4 (Group), Cognitive Processing Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), and Intuitive Eating Counseling.

Specific to eating disorders and body image, I operate from a Health At Every Size and Intuitive Eating approach and philosophy.

I am proudly Queer-Affirming, committed to social justice, and attempt to use my own power and privilege to increase access for others without. 

MY CREDENTIALS: 
I am currently licensed as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor NC (LCMHC# 11818; 2018), Certified Clinical Trauma Provider, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and a National Certified Counselor (NCC# 628306; 2015). 

 
MY EXPERIENCE: 

I have had the honor of working in several different settings with individuals of various ages, backgrounds, and presenting concerns. I have about five years of professional experience in the field of mental health working with North Carolina State University students at the University Counseling Center, at-risk youth as an MST Therapist, individuals and families with a variety of concerns as an OPT Therapist for Easter Seals UCP, and served as a Counselor / Case Manager for students enrolled at Elon University. My particular areas of interest and experience are trauma, eating and body image concerns, gender & sexuality, identity development, and interpersonal effectiveness. I truly believe life is a journey that presents us with many opportunities and challenges along the way; however, in a safe, supportive environment, we can find meaning and grow. My goal is to create a collaborative and supportive environment with my clients where positive coping skills, healthy choices, and meaningful insights can be pursued.

PERSONAL: 

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my partner and pets (Murphy & Birdie), streaming various shows/movies, reading, playing video games, decorating, or being outdoors. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the excitement of finding new food places to try with friends and family. Let me know if you have a favorite place to dine!
